Come hang out at our NEW WEBSITE!

Our primary goal here at FORUM artspace is to help enrich your daily life with easy access to local, national, and international art and artists, discussions and ideas. We want you to feel comfortable here, because you're among friends, but also maintain a level of order and professionalism that allows everyone to find what they're looking for.

Which is a fancy way to say we are really very proud to announce our new website, with flashy new features presented in a more sophistocated, web-sitey way. Current Exhibitions, Upcoming Events, and our Past Event Archive have been condensed and reorganized, then expanded to give you more actual content and less redundancy.  There are a few new ways to contact us, including a Contact Us tab with an in-site form, so you can reach us directly from the site without your email client open.  There's even a Links tab that lets you guys have a look at the sites we frequent on the web.

So please come and visit us regularly; even bookmark us and check back from time to time.  We're constantly adding and expanding to make this new site a hub for art-related activity.

Part of our new Contact system is our new individualized emails for each member:
General gallery inquiries  -  gallery@FORUMartspace.com
Christina Day   -   christina@FORUMartspace.com
Karl Anderson   -   karl@FORUMartspace.com
Paul Woznicki   -   paul@FORUMartspace.com

So come hang out, online and at the gallery.  We look forward to seeing you soon.

Bazaarbeque III call for Submissions!

Forum Artspace is pleased to announce that we will be continuing our annual tradition of Bazaarbeque! Last year, Forum was filled with over 150 works of art by over sixty artists, both local and international.

Hung salon style, the show fills our gallery walls, ceiling, and tabletops. We are currently asking artists to submit work. Due to the sheer volume of art in the exhibition, as well as our limited space, we ask that most work be smaller than 36"x36". 3D work is also acceptable, but the scale should be comparable.

All work must be brought to Forum Artspace, hang ready, no later than Sunday, May 27th* with forms (see attached). We will then spend the next three weeks curating, and installing Bazaarbeque for the June 15th opening. This means that submitting your work will not guarentee inclusion in Bazaarbeque. The show will run until July 20th.

Also keep in mind that besides being an art exhibition, Bazaarbeque is also a cookout and potluck. We encourage every artist to make food to share, or something to throw on the grill at the the events.

Drop off times will be on Sunday, May 27th from noon until eight. If you have any questions, comments, or wish to bring work at a separate date, please contact Forum Artspace here, or one of us personally by phone. Our numbers are:

Mike Abarca: 216.870.8493
Karl Anderson: 614.378.9877
Christina Day: 330.608.8614
Paul Woznicki: 216.288.5858

*If you do not live in the Cleveland area, but wish to participate, please call us or write us. We have had work come from as far away as Los Angeles, and would be glad to try and accommodate you.

April/May at FORUM: Theoretical Limits

Forum is pleased to present Theoretical Limits: Print, Painting, and Installation Work by Christina Day, opening Friday, April 20th from 5 to 10 pm.

Theoretical Limits
Print, Painting, and Installation Work by Christina Day
A University of Akron Myers School of Art Senior BFA Exhibition

A system is a set of interacting or interdependent components forming an integrated whole. In order to clearly analyze a system's structure, the information must be encoded-- broken down into the simplest possible forms. The visualization of data is one way of organizing chaos.
System formulation has taken a distinctly digital turn, increasing our sensitivity to physical objects and space. The constructed iterations in this exhibition reside in the gray area between the theoretical and the hypertangible.

The exhibition will be on display through the closing on Friday, May 18th. We hope to see you there!

Feb/March: Made for Cutting

Made for Cutting is a collection of work from artists whose processes involve integrating imagery from different sources to construct a new image. Whether through drawing, painting, digital media, or collage, these works seek to produce meaning yet resist understanding through the act of removing and restructuring visual elements and their context. Featuring work by Michael Abarca, Melinda Laszczynski, Liz Maugans, Kaetlyn McCafferty, Adrienne Slane, and Jason Weisensell.

Opening Feb. 17th, 5p-10p
Closing Mar. 16th, 5p-10p

Dec/Jan at Forum... work by Paul Woznicki

This month, FORUM features work by our very own Mr. Paul Woznicki

"Cultural Hegemony or the New Pangaea"

Paul's work explores the tools and methodologies required for the development of economic and cultural globalization, specifically the shipping container. Having revolutionized and exponentially driven down sh...ipping costs, the intermodal shipping container is a vehicle of culture, both literally and metaphorically. While it's presence and impact are integral to our quality of life, technologies, global views, and the world as we know it, they often live out of sight and out of mind.

So come on up, Friday Dec 16th 5-10p, Friday Jan 20th 5-10p, or anytime during the month by appointment! forumartspace@gmail.com

Total Recap!! New Events at Forum

After Complexity of things, Forum took a bit of time off to spend some time planning. The month off was a successful one, and we planned and delivered on two new programs.

Our first ever, Crit Night came off as a huge success. Cleveland Artist Lauren Yeager, and Akron Artist Zachariah Szabo spent the evening discussing new work with, with an intimate audience. Each crit session lasted about forty five minutes, and everyone involved was glad to be there.

Another first, Forum held an exquisite corpse drawing night. With over 20 people in attendance, the drawings were made for hours, and even spilled into the bar once we left Forum. Look out for methods of purchasing some of the wonderful creations, as we plan to put all the work to good use!

An Evolving Exhibition

We thank you, from the heart, to all who came out to the opening of The Complexity of Things and celebrated our one year anniversary with us. And it's a good thing that you came out to the opening because this is an evolving show. As I write here we are discussing the relationships between our work and it's relationship to the space. We may work back into what is presently up, hang new work, or work into each others work. We look forward to seeing you at our closing come February 18. If you couldn't make it here are some clips of what you've missed.

The Complexity of Things opens January 21st at Forum Artspace

The Complexity of Things is a four person group show whose work is tied together via the theme of relationships. Living in the twenty-first century can be synonymous with constant information bombardment. We continuously have to parse and interpret what we see, hear, and experience. This exhibition takes a moment to step back and examine the hows and whys of this process. Whether focusing on the relational interpretation in abstract language or the way we decipher and build meaning from images, The Complexity of Things focuses on the contemporary position of the global culture.
Opening: January 21st, 2011 5pm-9pm

Wilderness of Childhood

Come to 78th Street Studios this Friday for
John Martin's, Wilderness of Childhood opening at Forum Artspace

A Cleveland Artist and a wandering soul, John Martin’s Wilderness of Childhood juxtaposes his current landscape in Cleveland Heights to his early childhood growing up in suburban Detroit. This exhibition draws on various memories, forming an abstract whole that leaves room for the imagination. As the past is to us, these works might seem fleeting and incomplete, yet this comparison itself accentuates the finished quality of them. They are not static objects, rather they are evocative images meant for contemplation.

Opening reception Oct 15 5-9pm
Closing reception Nov 19 5-9pm

Besides John Martin's excellent show, many of the galleries are showing new work. Legation is presenting a solo exhibition of the 2006 CIA graduate Scott Goss, who makes two dimensional glass pieces focused on the cityscape of Cleveland. Live music will start in legation at 9:30. Kenneth Paul Lesko Gallery is opening Cinema 01, an exhibition of cinema inspired artwork. Check it out as well, for Forums own Micheal Abarca has a painting in it! As always, there is much more going on Come for the art, stay for the company, listen to the music and enjoy yourselves!

It was so great... let's do it again!

For everyone who came out, thank you! For everyone who didn't, you missed one hell of a time. And in case you haven't picked up a copy yet, this weeks Cleveland Scene has a small PR thing on us, which is our first time in print. Being super excited about it (and since they accidentally got the date wrong on our opening) we will be doing it all over again this Friday! Same time, same place. So if you didn't come before, here's your chance to come out, and if you already experienced it, here's your chance to hang out! Hope to see you all there.

Just some interesting things....

Last night, Forum spent a productive evening having fun, and swimming in Lake Eerie. During this, we got into a pretty long discussion about art, and the forms in which it takes. I'm in the process of doing a small essay with regards to last nights discussion, but I thought I would open it up to anyone who might be listening.

It started with the age old issue of painting and photography, but quickly moved to areas involving printmaking, the mark, and the aura.

So my questions to you are, how do you feel about naming forms of artmaking? How does painting differentiate from drawing, and how do you categorize a work of art between these? Where does print (or other forms of reproduction) fall? Also, how do you evaluate the original, versus a duplicate, or even a mode of art that has no original?

Off topic, I recently found something that might be a useful tool to all Artists out there. http://artsbiz101.com/ is a site that is meant to give artists a resource and tool to keep level headed when it comes to the business side of their lives. Hope it's helpful!

June NewsLetter

A Monthly Update from your friends at Forum.

Our Current Show, Poignant Demands: Not from Here will be closing on June 19th. It will be the second BBQ vs Potluck: Keep Feedin' You and Feedin' You, so prepare for a day of grilling and chilling, with great art and conversation to back up the food. Again, bring something for the grill, something to whet your whistle, and a little something to share. The potluck will start at 6pm and go for at least three hours (most likely later).

Just like every month, 78th Street Studios will have our monthly Third Friday ( June 18th), with all the galleries and the artists open to the public. Forum will still be showing Poignant Demands.

Recently, some friends and CIA Alums in NYC have been getting even more attention for their artistic endeavor... if you don't know about Thu and her Crew at Food Party, I suggest you look into them! Imagine if Pee-wee learned to cook, and Pee-wee's Playhouse was renamed Pee-wee's Kitchen and you might have a bit of an idea what Food Party is all about. I'm not just talking them up because I enjoy them and their work, but also because it seems a great many people do. Here is a recent Article from the LA Times on Food Party. http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/tv/la-ca-0516-food-party-20100516,0,6891576.story

For those of you who like to read and think as much as make,I recommend checking out Brevity, an online journal of concise nonfiction (http://www.creativenonfiction.org/brevity/index.htm). Some of the essays stick in my head for weeks.
